Sunday Link Love

Random bits of interesting things I’ve seen online, that aren’t going to get a whole post devoted to them, so it’s time to kick them out of my bookmarks:
- My state, Georgia, has some of the worst laws regarding people branded as “sex offenders” (a phrase I put it quotes because it’s full of many implications).
- A Christian bus driver refused to drive a bus with an atheist ad on the side. The atheists are getting busy, though: Ads in Canada and in Madison, WI, amongst other places. Yay for counter-advertising!
- The Free State Project’s goals aren’t exactly in line with my goals, but I find their little dream interesting anyway.
- STD and pregnancy protection, comfort, and pleasure outlawed in Coweta County, GA.
- Some ridiculous sexism from Asus, who thinks women can’t lift anything over 3 pounds. Low down on this page, you are assured that the 1kg weight allows women to be able to carry the EeePC.
- Spoken word by Andrea Gibson called The Swingset (with transcript), addressing gender identity.
- A fascinating look at a horrific art reproduction debacle, and some great commentary in the two posts about body image and industry.

I have heard a lot about the Free State. I used to listen to that Libertarian guy on the radio (I’ve blanked on his name) and he talked about that stuff all the time.
Not my gig, but I can see how you’d be interested.

I waffle on the Free State thing. Big-L Libertarians — or many of the loud ones, at least — seem to think it’s a fine way to become politically relevant, but when I hear about it there’s usually a lot of escapism wrapped up in the matter alongside the Utopian vote-with-your-feet idealism. I want to be optimistic, but I have trouble taking it seriously in the long term. To me, fixing the social problems we’ve got makes more sense than what amounts to a not-entirely-friendly takeover of one of the States of our Union.
As for local sex law: Just ugh. There’s a lot to fix there. I can definitely see how emigration could seem tempting with crap like that coming out of legislatures, even if I don’t ultimately agree with the strategy.

@Rebecca - Yeah, their politics aren’t my politics, but I sympathize and wouldn’t mind seeing them succeed.

@justben - Escapism and Utopianism are right up my alley.
I also don’t think it’s a serious plan for long term social success, but as a short term plan for “things that are fun to dream about” or even a long term plan of at least “being surrounded by people who think like me while the whole thing goes to shit”, well, I see where they’re coming from, even if I’m not on that particular political bandwagon.
